The Volcanic Epic is a unique mountain bike stage race, held across 200km’s of New Zealand’s spectacular North Island geothermal region.

The Stages
A MTB Stage Race sees solo or pairs riders race a new course each day, with different challenges and terrain.
Our stages are between 40 and 60km do not require a high-level of technical skill with the majority of the stages on grade 3 and a touch of easier grade 4 trails and navigation skills are not needed with our well-marked stages.
Solo Categories
SOLO 4 & 2 DAY
Age is calculated as of the 31st of December 2023. The solo categories are for both men and women.
- Open Riders are 16-39 years of age
- Masters 40+ Riders are 40-49 years of age
- Grand Masters 50+ Riders are 50-59 years of age
- Super Grand Masters 60+ Riders are 60+ years of age
- E Bike Riders are 16+ years of age
Riders under 16 can apply for special exception to enter.
Pairs Categories
Age is calculated as of the 31st of December 2023. The youngest rider in the team determines the race category.
- Open Men 16+ Both riders are male
- Open Women 16+ Both riders are female
- Mixed One rider is male and one rider is female
- Masters Men 40+ Both riders are 40-49 years of age
- Masters Women 40+ Both riders are 40+ years of age
- Grand Masters Men 50+ Both riders are 50+ years of age
Riders under 16 can apply for special exception to enter.
